The Benefits of Over-Seeding with Winter Rye
Over-seeding with winter rye is a strategic practice that offers numerous advantages for your lawn or agricultural fields. Here’s why you should consider incorporating this hardy cover crop into your planting regimen.

1. Soil Health Improvement
Winter rye improves soil structure and fertility. Its deep root system helps prevent soil erosion and compacts less than many other plants, allowing for better water infiltration and root growth.

2. Weed Suppression
The rapid growth of winter rye can effectively suppress weeds. By establishing a thick cover, it outcompetes unwanted plants for light, nutrients, and water, reducing the need for herbicides.

3. Nutrient Management
As a cover crop, winter rye captures nutrients, particularly nitrogen, that might otherwise leach away during the winter months. When it decomposes in the spring, it releases these nutrients back into the soil, enriching it for future crops.

4. Erosion Control
Planting winter rye helps stabilize the soil, preventing erosion during winter rains and snowmelt. Its root system holds the soil in place, protecting it from the elements.

5. Enhancing Biodiversity
Over-seeding with winter rye encourages biodiversity in your ecosystem. It provides habitat for beneficial insects and improves soil microbiology, contributing to a healthier environment.

6. Early Spring Growth
Winter rye germinates quickly and grows early in the spring, allowing for early forage for livestock or a green manure that can be tilled into the soil. This extends the growing season and maximizes productivity.

7. Cost-Effective
Winter rye is a cost-effective option for improving soil health and productivity. Its low seed cost and resilience make it an accessible choice for both home gardeners and farmers.

Conclusion
Incorporating winter rye through over-seeding not only benefits your soil but also enhances overall ecosystem health. Whether you’re looking to improve your lawn, increase crop yields, or manage weeds, winter rye is a valuable addition to your agricultural practices. Consider implementing this effective strategy for a more resilient and productive landscape.

We are currently taking appointments for over-seeding in October.

What is pre-emergent and why do you need it?  Pre-emergent is used to prevent summertime annual weeds. You want to apply herbicides when the soil temperature is around 55 degrees or above for at least 36-72 hours. If you are using granule herbicides, you want to water that into the soil to release the herbicide that is trapped in each granule. Just beware, this application does nothing for the current weeds that are present. This is to aide in having a weed free lawn in the summer.

Prepping your lawn for Fall

Today is the first day of Fall.  Although it may not feel like Fall in Texas, now is the time to prepare your lawn for the season.

Here are some tips to help:
  1. Fertilize.....Fertilizing in the fall will help prolong your fall colors and it also helps your lawn bounce back in the Spring. Fall fertilizer should be higher in potassium & nitrogen and lower in phosphorous.
  2. Watering....Yes, you should still water when your grass goes dormant if it doesn't rain for a long period of time. Grass is still living and needs moisture to survive. Watering before a hard freeze is helpful in reducing freeze injury to the grass. It takes much colder air temperatures to lower the temperature of a
moist soil than that of a dry soil.
  3. Mow....Continue to mow until the majority of the growth has stopped. If you have some leaves on your property, this will mulch them up and provide nutrients to your soil.
  4. Aerate....aerating your lawn will break up compacted soil which will allow it to "breathe". It allows oxygen, water and fertilizer to easily reach the roots of the grass.
  5. Rake the leaves....Face it, raking leaves is NOT fun but it is necessary. By allowing them to blanket your lawn, you are opening yourselves up to fungal diseases and root rot. If you don't like to rake, try bagging them with a mower and then mulching the small amounts left into the soil.
  6. Fill in bald patches....This is a good time to fill in all the bald spots in your yard.
  7. Winter Rye....If you like green grass all year long, have someone come out and prepare your yard for application of Winter Rye. There is a very short window to get this to take. Texas weather needs to learn to cooperate!
